Build It Anyway

construction

There are times in life when you feel hopeless and helpless. You wonder if anything you’re doing is making a difference. You wonder if anything you’re saying is resonating with anyone. Does anyone care what you’re contributing? The truth is, people can be so fickle. They like you one day and don’t like you the next.

So how can you know if you’re impacting the world? Sometimes you don’t…until later. There are some people that you will touch in profound ways that you may never know about, this side of heaven. But if you’re passionate about your calling, then pursue it.

There’s a song by Martina McBride called,”Anyway
Let me share some of the lyrics with you:

You can spend your whole life building
Something from nothing
One storm can come and blow it all away
Build it anyway

You can chase a dream
That seems so out of reach
And you know it might not ever come your way
Dream it anyway

God is great!
But sometimes life ain’t good
And when I pray
It doesn’t always turn out like I think it should
But I do it anyway…

That’s life, people.
That’s life.
Because even if you do it and it doesn’t succeed the way YOU think it should, does that mean you should give up?  Does that mean you’re not impacting others?  Nope. You can’t possibly know who you’ve touched along the way. As a Christian, I believe that we will find out one day in eternity how many people’s lives we’ve touched. But, even if you don’t believe that, I know that everything we do has a ripple effect. Are your ripples inspiring our crippling others? Are your ripples encouraging or discouraging others? You want your ripples to have the maximum positive impact.

Keep on keeping on. Keep building that dream.  Don’t give up.  The great thing about this life is that we’re not relegated to only ONE dream per lifetime. We can have SEVERAL dreams. MULTIPLE dreams. Be encouraged!

Keep moving forward. Keep pressing toward your goals. If something doesn’t go right, yes, you can take some time to mourn the loss. But don’t quit. Keep plugging away. You don’t know how many folks you will positively impact.
It’s not in the number of “likes” you get on social media.
It’s in the number of lives you touch.

Build On It!

construction worker

What are you already doing? Build on it!

So many times we become discouraged in the work we’re doing. Perhaps it hasn’t yielded the ‘crop’ or the ‘dream’ that we envisioned or expected, but, does that mean it’s not growing? No! Now, the exception would be if you know beyond the shadow of a doubt that something is dead/not growing/not producing. That’s different. BUT, If you know it’s not dead, then, KEEP YOUR DREAM ALIVE! I submit to you that: SLOW growth doesn’t mean NO Growth, so keep going!!!

Sometimes it takes a time of rest and some new perspective to fully see the impact that you’re having on this world. For instance, I have this blog and a few blogs on Facebook, and I try to post inspirational messages & helpful information. I have a fledgling business and also am in the process of writing a couple of books. I began to become somewhat discouraged because I didn’t feel like I was seeing the fruits of my labor. Were people being positively impacted? The responses have been sparse, but there. Will my books make a difference? Will my business take off? Etc.

But, God really opened my eyes to see that YES the impact is THERE. You cannot always SEE the rewards of your labor right away. How does a plant grow from a seed? First you must plant the seed in the soil, water and care for it and WAIT. Then the seed sprouts and you must fertilize and water it, and make sure the plant receives sunlight. It grows. But you have to keep taking care of it. It doesn’t spring up into a massive, leafy, lush, gorgeous plant overnight! No. BUT with steady care and time it WILL if you don’t give up!  Remember, it may be a slow process, but you are STILL PROGRESSING. Baby steps are better than no steps at all. 🙂  Steady progress is progress.

So, my question to you is this?
What are you doing right now? What are you doing that perhaps you’ve let languish or perhaps the fizzle has gone out of due to discouragement? Let me tell you something…WHAT YOU’RE DOING MAKES A DIFFERENCE EVEN IF YOU CAN’T SEE IT YET.

BUILD on what you started. In due season, in due time, you will see the impact you’re doing/making.
And don’t despise the day of small beginnings. People are watching you. People are being impacted by your words and your love and your care and your giving of yourself. They may not always say it, but, trust me, they are feeling the positive effects of what you’re giving.
“Do not despise the day of small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin” (Zech. 4:10).
And when you DO get those 1 or 2 people who come to you and say “Hey, what you said really helped me” or “Thanks you brought a smile to my face”, then REJOICE! YOU ARE MAKING AN IMPACT. And impacts reverberate! Like a pebble dropped into a large body of water, impacts have a RIPPLE EFFECT! Yes!

Keep going!
Love to y’all!

You ARE Good Enough!

you're good enough

A friend of mine recently posted a picture on her Facebook page of someone holding a sticky note that says “you are good enough!” It hit home. I don’t know about you, but, so many times I question, “am I good enough?”

Am I good enough to be loved?
Am I good enough to fit into that social circle?
Am I good enough to be accepted?
Am I good enough to be respected?
Am I good enough to complete that project or reach that goal?
Am I good enough to seal that huge deal at work?
Am I good enough to be valued by others?

The list could go on and on. What makes us question our own value? Have we been told by someone that we’re not valuable? Has it been demonstrated by another person’s actions toward us that we are not up to snuff? Have others made us feel that somehow we’ll never measure up to the perfection they expect? Or has it been communicated to us somehow that others don’t see us as able enough, talented enough, or intelligent enough to obtain a certain goal?

I daresay most of us have had such an experience in our lives. Sometimes we experience this type of criticism or rejection by well-meaning people in our families, friendships, social or professional circles. The trick is not believing the naysayers. Constructive criticism is one thing. It is usually given in such a way as to build up the person. It should be given with care and in a way that will help the person see where they can tweak or improve in a certain area without tearing them to shreds verbally.

But, if you’ve received harsh criticism or if you’ve been overlooked, berated, undervalued, etc., I’ve got news for you. You ARE good enough! The truth is that God made each of us uniquely special. We don’t all have the same set of talents and abilities, but, there is greatness in each of us!  There is something each of us are wired to do and to do well. Don’t undervalue your unique gifts.  Develop them and use them to bless others.

As you move forward to develop your gifts and talents, you may experience instances or periods of failure.  But, remember this –  failure at a task or a goal does NOT equal your failure as a person.  Your “who” is not determined by your “do”.  Some things you will have to continuously practice at to hone your skills in a certain area. Other things you will try and then realize that particular thing may not be for you. But the important thing is that you TRIED. You didn’t hold back. There will be no regrets because you attempted it. John Maxwell (author) has written a whole series of books, CD’s called “Fail Forward”. Even if you fail at something, if you learn from it, you’ve not failed at all. You’ve gained more valuable knowledge with which to move forward and tackle the next goal.

Your value  as a person, is not and should not be defined by people, but, by God. You are fearfully and wonderfully made. There is no one exactly like you. You are loved with a love that never wanes and never ends. And in those times where others put you down or you experience failure of some kind, you’ll need to remind yourself of this fact: YOU are SPECIAL.  If you have to, write it on sticky notes and stick it all around your house or apartment.  And surround yourself with positive people!  We each need people who are in our corner and believe in us!  It’s important.  Also, one of the best things you can do is let someone else know how special and important they are. I’m a huge advocate of paying it forward.  There are so many people in the world who have not been told how valuable and special they are.  And God may use YOU to be the one to tell them.  You can plant a seed of love into someone else’s life.  And you never know how big that seed will grow or what it will develop into.  Maybe because of you, someone who wanted to quit life, decides to continue on and becomes an amazing motivator of others.  Maybe that person who was going to quit med school goes on to become a world renowned physician or surgeon.  You never know.  So, as I hopefully breathe life into you, so, breathe life into others.  Remember how spectacular you are!  Silence the voices of the naysayers and shout out loud, “I AM GOOD ENOUGH!”
