Life Is A Song (a poem)

file00024592291

Life is a song
Life is a song I sing
Full of sweet notes
Sweet notes of love
Sweet notes that flow through the breeze
Flow through the air, flow through the trees

Life is a song
A song of woe
Woeful sadness
It’s blue and it’s cold
Deep bitter tones of heartache and heart-break
Swirling down to the ground

Life is a song
A song of questions
Where will I go?
How will I get there?
What will I do?
Questioning the paths I should take to reach my goals

Life is a song
A song of calm
A song of waiting
A song of patience
It’s quiet and serene
Like a still autumn morn’

Life is a song
A song of wisdom
Wisdom learned from life’s experiences
Sober notes
Notes swelling from well-crafted instruments
Instruments that are seasoned with time

Life is a song
Life is a song of wonder
A song of adventure and joy
An irreplaceable song
That ignites the soul
Live!
Sing!

Being Human

Isn’t being human fun? Haha. I know some of you rolled your eyes…and others laughed. Define “fun” you say. Well, let’s just say that being human is definitely an adventure. We are unique and complex beings.  We are able to experience the world physically and emotionally.  We’re able to interact with others and express thoughts, ideas and feelings in various formats.  We’re able to create things.  It’s really quite amazing! What’s not fun about being human?  Disappointments, death, hurt/pain, sadness.  But, without the yucky parts of life, it’s harder to truly appreciate when things are really good.  When something good happens, you feel joy, relief, elation, etc.  Whether  you realize it or not, you mentally compare the good moment/experience/event to the bad one(s), and you’re extra thankful for the good.  Life is full of challenges.  Situations are challenging.  People are challenging.  Sometimes there are misunderstandings. Sometimes there is blatant harm.  But, whatever you’re going through or whatever you’ve been through, please oh please, allow it to make you better, stronger, more patient, more loving, more COMPASSIONATE, a better listener, a better giver, etc.  Bless others.

To inspire you, I recently saw Alicia Keys perform a song on Katie Couric’s daytime talk show (I couldn’t find this clip but I found another performance).  The song is called “Brand New Me”.  It’s on  her new album “Girl On Fire”.  The song stopped me in my tracks.  This melancholy melody blossomed into a chorus of strength.  It seems to be about coming out of an unhealthy relationship, but, can be related to other things as well.  Please take the time to read the lyrics below and listen to the song here –> “BRAND NEW ME” (note: She does a piano solo at beginning.  If you want to skip this, the singing starts at approximately 2:50 minutes)

Brand New Me – by Alicia Keys

It’s been a while, I’m not who I was before
You look surprised, your words don’t burn me anymore
Been meaning to tell you, but I guess it’s clear to see
Don’t be mad, it’s just the brand new kind of me
Can’t be bad, I found a brand new kind of free

Careful with your ego, he’s the one that we should blame
Had to grab my heart back
God know something had to change
I thought that you’d be happy
I found the one thing I need, why you mad
It’s just the brand new kind of me

It took a long long time to get here
It took a brave, brave girl to try
It took one too many excuses, one too many lies
Don’t be surprised, don’t be surprised
If I talk a little louder
If I speak up when you’re wrong
If I walk a little taller
I’ve been on to you too long
If you noticed that I’m different
Don’t take it personally
Don’t be mad, it’s just the brand new kind of me
And it ain’t bad, I found a brand new kind of free

Oh, it took a long long road to get here
It took a brave brave girl to try
I’ve taken one too many excuses, one too many lies
Don’t be surprised, oh see you look surprised
Hey, if you were a friend, you want to get know me again
If you were worth a while
You’d be happy to see me smile
I’m not expecting sorry
I’m too busy finding myself
I got this
I found me, I found me, yeah
I don’t need your opinion
I’m not waiting for your ok
I’ll never be perfect, but at least now i’m brave
Now, my heart is open
And I can finally breathe
Don’t be mad, it’s just the brand new kind of free
That ain’t bad, I found a brand new kind of me
Don’t be mad, it’s a brand new time for me, yeah

Toodles ♥

The Power of Song – part 3 of 3

Thank you for journeying with me in this mini-series on the power of song.  I’ve enjoyed choosing songs that have been very uplifting, healing and inspirational to me…and I hope to you, too.  I hope it has caused you to think about the power that songs  have to cheer, console and uplift us whenever we need a bit of encouragement.  I love to hear some of your favorites!

The last song I’ve chosen is from a CD that has gotten me through many, many hard times. I played this CD so much, that I began to feel like the artist/singer was my best friend.  Not kidding. 🙂  I knew every word to almost every single song (especially my favorites) and it helped me to keep my faith in tact through some very rough circumstances that were going on over a period of years.  This song is unapologetically gospel.  Even if you do not believe in Christ as savior or Lord, you may find something about it that encourages you…such as the chords, melody, harmonies, tone or warmth of the song.  God bless you.

The song: Thank You Lord (For Being There For Me) – by Fred Hammond and Radical for Christ

Lyrics Below.  Video Link –>  Click Here  (if any of you had trouble with the link at first, I fixed it. Should work now.)

[Chorus]
Thank You Lord for being there for me, for me
I’ve gotta say thank You Lord for being there for me
Seemed like I was going down, but Your love came in and rescued me
Wanna thank You Lord for being there for me
Wanna thank You Lord for being there for me

[Repeat Chorus 1x]

[Channel A]
Now if it had not been for the Lord who
Who was on our side
There is no way that I could make it no
So I come to say
I just want to thank You
Thank You Lord for being there for me, ooh, ooh
Thank You Lord for being there for me, ooh, ooh

[Channel B]
For life and health and strength I’m grateful
For life abundantly I wanna say thank You
For being a partaker of Your grace you know I’m grateful
For receiving Your mercy daily I wanna say thank You
For keeping my loved ones safe You know I’m grateful
For allowing my next breathe to take
I just want to say I’m grateful, I thank You
You see I can say it and you can say it and she can say it and he can say it
Thank You

[Vamp A]
Thank You Jesus, thank You Jesus, thank You
Thank You Jesus, thank You Jesus
Thank You
Thank You Jesus
Thank You
I wanna say thank You

[Repeat Vamp A 2x]

[Vamp B]
Thank You Jesus, thank You Jesus, thank You
Thank You Jesus, thank You Jesus
Thank You
Thank You Jesus
Thank You
I just want to say I’m grateful I thank You
Thank You Lord for being there, for being there for me, ooh, ooh
Thank You Lord for being there
Thank You Lord for being there for me

The Power of Song – Part 2 of 3

Ok, so this is part two of a mini-series on the power songs have to influence us.  My focus is on how music encourages us.  Today’s song speaks to me a story of a person (a woman, but it could apply to a man’s struggle as well) who perhaps has been in some bad relationships.  She’s given of herself to others beyond capacity and tried to please others to her own detriment.  She’s a fighter.  She has pushed through tough times and had to fend for herself to survive.  She’s incurred many bruises and many scars along the way, and has had to hold it all together.  Healing and being able to love again is something that took time, but, in the end she was able to give and receive love again.  Perhaps this speaks to you as it has to me.  Many of us have been through some bad experiences, but, we can heal from them, and experience good things in our futures.  As the song says “It’ll be alright again.” It’s a really powerful song.  It could mean something unique and different to you, but, give a listen to “Little Miss” by Sugarland.

Lyrics below & also in the youtube video.  Here’s the video link –> Little Miss

“Little Miss”

Little miss down on love
Little miss, I give up
Little miss, I’ll get tough, don’t you worry about me anymore
Little miss checkered dress
Little miss, one big mess
Little miss, I’ll take less when I always give so much more

It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright
Yeah, sometimes you gotta lose ’til you win
It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright
It’ll be alright again
It’ll be alright again, I’m okay
It’ll be alright again, I’m okay (I’m okay)
It’ll be alright again, I’m okay

Little miss, do your best
Little miss, never rest
Little miss, be my guest, I’ll make more anytime that it runs out
Little miss, you’ll go far
Little miss, hide your scars
Little miss, who you are is so much more than you like to talk about

It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright
Yeah, sometimes you gotta lose ’til you win
It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright
It’ll be alright again
It’ll be alright again, I’m okay
It’ll be alright again, I’m okay (I’m okay)
It’ll be alright again, I’m okay

Hold on
Hold on, you are loved
Are loved…

Little miss, brand new start
Little miss, do your part
Little miss, big old heart beats wide open and she’s ready now for love

It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright
Yeah, sometimes you gotta lose ’til you win
It’s alright, it’s alright, it’s alright
It’ll be alright again
It’ll be alright again, I’m okay
It’ll be alright again, I’m okay (I’m okay, it’ll be alright again)
I’m okay! (It’ll be alright again)
